Australia’s four-time Oyster Shucking Champion, Gerard “Doody” Dennis, is heading back to Ireland to represent Australia and the Southern Hemisphere at the World Oyster Opening Competition. Doody finished an impressive 11th from 16th in 2023, quite a feat when his first experience of the Galway Flat oyster came just days before the competition. In 2024, he will face the current World Champion, United Kingdom’s Frederico Fiorillo, along with eager champion shuckers representing Canada , the United States, Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and France and of course Ireland, who host their own Nationals on September 27. Gerard has honed his technique alongside some of Australia’s best shuckers, including Jim and John Yiannaros of Batemans Bay Oysters and former world champion Jim Wild. His skills have already earned him four gold and two silver medals at Australia’s Oyster Shucking Championships, which are supported by Australia’s Oyster Coast. It’s a long way from the shores of Bhundoo Clyde River at Batemans Bay to Galway, but with your support, Doody is ready to take on the world’s best at the oldest oyster festival of them all. Join us and be part of this exciting journey! Read more about Australia’s Oyster Shucking Championships.
